I Don't Want To Do That!

Updated: Jan 4

Mobile Phone swipt.

Hey Friend,

The other day, I finished work and sat down on the couch. We had 45 minutes until we needed to leave for my son's soccer party. It was a Wednesday night, and I had just finished a long work day.  “I sat and scrolled Facebook. (A $10 per hour task based on the 3 Easy Steps to Value Your Time Today).

Does that sound familiar?  Well, read on to know what I did next and how it relates to time management.

Doing Things That I Don't Want to Do!

Scrolling Facebook in that moment didn't feel great.  It felt...mindless.  It was boring. And...it also satisfied my need for a dopamine hit.

My youngest son, eager to get to his soccer party, asked how long it would be until we left.

“Twenty minutes,” I yelled, easily as annoyed as he was that somehow the past five minutes seemed oddly non-existent.

"Twenty minutes," he shouted. "You said that ten minutes ago."

I couldn't argue with him. Maybe eight minutes ago, I said we would head out in twenty minutes. But, as an adult balancing the reality of TIME, as it truly exists, to being punctual, but not too early, I struggled with that twenty minutes moving through space slower than a snail in a marathon.

And then it dawned on me. I have a department store return next door to the restaurant we are going to.

Two birds. One stone.

We could leave now, and I could be productive, punctual, a kick-ass mom, and get some dinero in my wallet! Win-win.

Except for one big problem.

I didn't want to.

I didn't want to go into that store, wait in line, and deal with the clerk asking if anything was wrong with the item.  I wanted to stay on the couch and continue scrolling Facebook. That activity felt so good—so numb, so brainless, and so liberating.

But here's the deal.

Sometimes, every day, I do things that I do not want to do. And I do them because they propel me forward and towards my goals.

I send the email. I drive to the place. I make the phone call. I organize the pile. I get the stuff done.

Productive people are NOT productive because they have some magical fairy dust that helps them. They are productive because they use tools and systems, and they fight against negative self-talk to get things done.

And you are a productive person.

You are a productive person because you are showing up today. You want this, you crave this, and you believe in yourself like I believe in you.

So I am asking you, FRIEND, what do you not want to do today that you know will push you to your next level? Let's do it now. I'm right here holding your hand.
